 Apostles' Creed

WHAT IS THE APOSTLES' CREED?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into hell, the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

WHAT IS A CREED?

A creed is a statement of what we believe and teach.  BIBLE NARRATIVE:  Peter's statement of what the disciples believed, Matthew 16:13-16.

WHY IS THIS STATEMENT OF BELIEFS CALLED THE APOSTLES' CREED?

It is called the Apostles' Creed because it is a statement of the teachings, or doctrines, of the Apostles as found in the Bible.

WHY SHOULD I MEMORIZE THE APOSTLES' CREED?

If anyone asks, I should know by memory what I believe.  "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear."  I Peter 3:15.
