 Footwashing

Foot Washing is a sacrament instituted by Jesus Christ to enable man to fulfill the law of God. . . "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."  "Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself; I am the Lord.  Lev. 19:18.

Just as Baptism removes the enmity in us against God and enables us to love God, so foot washing removes the enmity in us against our brother and enables us to love our brother as we love ourselves.  "Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.  Rom. 13:10.

The enmity that is in us against our brother is that we think too highly of ourselves; we long to rule over others; and we seek only after our own interests.

Jesus washed the feet of the disciples to show them that they were to become "servants" of the Lord by serving one another. "And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all."  Mark 9:35
